High Definition(HD), sometimes refered to as High Density generally refers to a transmission or display system that  utilises a higher resolution (Detail) video image than that of standard TV's or Monitors(SD).

SD is 720x576 lines in resolution in the UK(PAL)

HD is currently 1280x720 or 1920x1080 lines in resolution.

HD is refered to in simpler terms as 720i/p or 1080i/p

There are two obvious differences between SD and HD that would be immediately identified.

HD displays in Widescreen (16:9) as opposed to 4:3

HD gives a much clearer and detailed viewing image.
